DESIGNING WOMEN (with children)

In observance of Mother’s Day, and particularly to honor those well-heeled mater units that manage not only to raise children but to outfit the world in the finest fashions, this Couture Carrie post is devoted to Designing Mothers, in alphabetical order. This list is by no means exhaustive, but from what I’ve heard, being a full-time mom and a designer sure is!

1) Laura Ashley (1925-1985)
This woman practically invented the floral frock, and made it socially acceptable for mothers and daughters to dress identically.

2) Tory Burch
She even designs for kids – see the adorable girls’ tunic (top right), available at toryburch.com!

3) Allegra Hicks
This model and actress turned designer and mom has a signature breezy look encapsulated by this printed green short caftan (left), for purchase at net-a-porter.com.

4) Milla Jovovich

Her clothing line with friend and business partner Carmen Hawk is so popular that the duo was invited to design a line for Target, which debuted this spring to rave reviews. At right is the Jovovich-Hawk Maureen silk leaf dress, also at net-a-porter.
5) Donna Karan

This woman needs no introduction. She is a genius, and her wearable designs have stood the test of time. What is more, her clothes are accessible! See, for example, this cheeky hot pink DKNY strapless mini dress with floral appliqué (at left), available at bloomingdales.com.

6) Jeanne Lanvin (1867-1946)

It is a little-known fact that Mme. Lanvin first designed the loose-fitting chemise-style flowing dress for her young daughter, and when it was received so warmly, adapted it for women! Of course, we all know and love this billowy frock (pictured at right, via style.com).

7) Stella McCartney

Her graceful grays for fall are simply delightful! Photo at left courtesy nymag.com/fashion.

8) Sonia Rykiel

The Queen of Knits was so rightly crowned, as illustrated by this Sonia by Sonia Rykiel butterfly intarsia sweater dress (at right, for purchase at net-a-porter.com).

9) Diane von Furstenberg
Her empire, no longer limited to the silk jersey wrap dress for which she first became famous in the 70s, has experienced a recent resurgence, due no doubt to amazing tailored looks like this one at left, from the Fall 2008 New York ready-to-wear. Runway coverage courtesy style.com.

10) Vera Wang
Not just for brides anymore, as aptly demonstrated by this lovely silk-flower-laden frock for Fall 2008, all sparkles and tulle in deep bronze hues. Photo via style.com.

11) Vivienne Westwood
Her fanciful shows and collections continue to delight. Witness the genius underwear/outerwear interplay of this fall 2008 runway look at right, courtesy style.com.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, COUTURECARRIE FANS!
